NEXT WEEK'S SCHEDULE Monday, June 3 - A day RESOURCES FOR BHMS FAMILIES CHROME BOOK AND I-PAD RETURN PROCEDURES On Tuesday, June 4, teachers will be conducting a precheck of students' school-issued iPads (grade 6) and Chromebooks (grades 7 & 8) and all accessories. Students will be asked to take home a Precheck Summary, which will show you whether they owe a fine for missing or damaged items. On Wednesday, June 5, the school will be collecting all devices, accessories, and any associated fines for lost or damaged items. Parents/guardians can assist in this process by doing the following: On June 4: a) Remind your student in 6th, 7th or 8th grade to bring in their school-issued iPad or Chromebook, case, charger block and cord for the precheck. On June 5: a) Remind your student in 6th, 7th or 8th grade to bring in their school-issued iPad or Chromebook, case, charger block and cord for final return. For your convenience, we have prepared a summary outlining the above dates and procedures, as well as the fines for damaged or lost items. Thank you in advance for your assistance in making this return process run efficiently. 8TH GRADE NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR INDUCTION CEREMONY The 8th grade National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Induction Ceremony is set for June 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the BHMS cafetorium. Students will rehearse with Mrs. Jaster during the day on June 4. This is the most formal event of the school year at BHMS. It is appropriate that the dress code be followed. For girls, dresses are not necessary, but typically worn. Shoulders should be covered and the length of the dress in accordance with the dress code. Boys typically wear dress pants and a button down shirt. No tie or jacket is required as it will be warm in the cafeteria. However, many boys will choose to wear a suit. Extended family members are welcome to attend. If your child has met the NJHS criteria but is not able to attend the ceremony, please advise Mrs. Jaster, 8th grade Counselor, as soon as possible. 8TH GRADE RECOGNITION CEREMONY AND YEAR END PARTY Thursday, June 13: 8th Grade Recognition Ceremony from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. at BHMS. See details under PTO NEWS. 8TH GRADERS INTERESTED IN BH HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS OR OTHER CO-CURRICULARS: See District News below or click this link for BH High School Athletic News for Incoming 9th Graders, which includes athletic and other co-curricular information, including meetings and try-outs, for current 8th graders heading to BHMS. The high school webmaster updates this item as new information becomes available. PTO NEWS FINAL MEETING: Wednesday, June 12. Evening meeting at 7:00 p.m. Speaker will be Margaret Schultz, BHS District Administrator for Social-Emotional Learning and Educational Equity. She will discuss the District's efforts to assure equity and inclusion, and strengthen social and emotional learning. NEW INFORMATION! GR. 5/6/7 YEAR END PARTY: Friday, June 7, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. The drop-off event takes place at BHMS and features an inflatable obstacle course, a henna artist, BHHS DJs with dance contests, sports, a photo booth and more! Each student will have a Cool Jacks ice cream sandwich, pizza, snacks and water. Wristbands may be purchased online through the PTO E-Store or at school for $10 starting June 3 at lunch (cash or check made out to BHMS PTO). If you'd like to volunteer, sign up here. Chec 8TH GRADE CELEBRATION: Save the date for the Class of 2023 end-of-middle-school celebration on Thursday, June 13, (rain date: Wednesday, June 12) from 8:00 p.m. until 10:00 pm at the Bloomfield Hills Swim and Tennis Club. Tickets are $10 each presale, or $15 each at the door. Presale tickets can be purchased online through the PTO E-Store or during lunch on June 11 and 12 (cash or check made out to BHMS PTO). The PTO would love for all 8th graders to attend. If your student's ticket cost presents a financial hardship, please e-mail Mr. English. VOLUNTEERS: FINAL DAY TO REGISTER FOR FALL ROBOTICS TEAMS/CAMPS Friday, May 31, at 11:59 p.m. is the absolute deadline to sign up for any District Robotics teams (FLL Jr. fall grades 2-3; FLL fall grades 4-5/optional 6 with no experience, or FTC fall grades 6-8. Teams start over the summer. It is also the last chance to sign up for the FLL Summer Camp for grades 2-6, FTC Summer Camp (Co-Ed or Girls Only) for grades 6-8, and Girls STEAM Summer camp for grades 1-5. Sign up for a team or camp through the Bloomfield Recreation website at https://www.bloomfield.org/ STEM CAMP SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY Oakland Schools is offering a middle school summer STEM camp experience this year for students entering grades 6-8 in the fall of 2019 (current 5th/6th/7th grade students). Bloomfield HIlls Middle School has been provided a scholarship opportunity through Oakland Schools for one middle school student to attend the Oakland Schools STEM camp. This scholarship will cover the cost of tuition. The cost of the camp is $190 per student and the scholarship is inclusive of all costs, including after-camp care provided by the YMCA. However, transportation will not be provided. STEM camp will be one week in duration and held on the following dates:
The purpose of the camp is to provide middle school age students an opportunity to explore a variety of career pathways that are STEM-related. Students will experience a different career area on three of the days with the emphasis on hands-on, experiential activities. They will spend one day at Oakland University with the School of Engineering and on the final day, they will engage with business and industry in a variety of career exploration activities. FOR FAMILIES OF CURRENT BHMS 7TH GRADERS Your current 7th grade student has the opportunity to take an exciting and educational trip to Washington, D.C. with classmates next year as a BHMS 8th grader. Mr. Neuwirth and Mr. Weisenberger will be leading the group, with additional staff members attending as needed. The trip is scheduled for April 15 - 17, 2020. BHMS uses the professional travel company, Student Adventures, to plan every aspect of the trip. This is a wonderful opportunity for 8th grade students to visit the nation's capital, and learn firsthand about the amazing historical figures, landmarks and events that make this country great. The price of $710 covers virtually everything on the trip - motor coach transportation, hotel accommodations, most meals, sightseeing admissions, and medical insurance. The trip is available next year on a first-come, first-served basis, so please watch for sign-up information in the fall if your student is interested participating. This information is being provided now so you can encourage your student to do lawn mowing, dog walking, baby/pet sitting, yard work or other summer work to earn money toward their trip. REMINDER ABOUT NUT RESTRICTIONS AT BHMS Please remember that BHMS IS A PEANUT and TREE NUT RESTRICTED BUILDING, 24-HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. There are students in the building who are highly allergic to peanuts and all kinds of tree nuts, and their well-being is of concern. Students, parents/guardians or visitors should not bring items containing peanuts, tree nuts or products derived from nuts of any type into the building. This includes items given to the office staff, to teachers, for classrooms, bake sales, end-of-sports or club parties or any other occasion. Thank you so much for your consideration. Middle School Football Camp 2019 All BHMS, EHMS, and WHMS incoming 7th and 8th grade students are invited to attend the Future Black Hawks Football Skills Camp from Monday, August 26 - Thursday, August 28, 2019. The camp is free will take place on the BHHS football field from 3 - 5 p.m. Student athletes will not need a helmet - just cleats to participate. High School News for Incoming 9th Graders The following events are coming up for current 8th graders interested in high school athletics and clubs next school year: K-8 Baseball Clinic & Camp K-8 Black Hawks Baseball Clinic K-8 Baseball Camp Your Summer Adventure Starts in Bloomfield Hills Schools! Bloomfield Hills Schools has Summer Camp opportunities for all ages, all abilities, and all interests! New this year, several camps will offer limited transportation services. We have also expanded our before and aftercare options. Start your adventure today at www.bloomfield.org/summer! Spaces are limited for many of our camps. Student Athlete Physicals for 2019-2020 Physicals for student-athletes will be offered on June 3, 2019, from 5-7 p.m. at Bloomfield Hills High School for incoming 7th-12th graders. Only those 14+ can receive ECGs. The cost is $20 per physical, or $25 with electrocardiogram. Space is limited and online registration is required at www.bloomfield.org/physicals.
