SCHOOL NEWS

HAPPY SUMMER TO ALL OF YOU!

The BHMS Main Office will be open, with limited staff, during the months of June and August. Please call ahead before coming in to make sure that someone is available to assist you. The office will be closed during the entire month of July.

The BHMS staff is thankful for another great year, and wishes you and your family a safe and happy summer!

PICK UP STUDENT MEDICATION IN OFFICE

If your student has non-prescription or prescription medication in the office, including Epi Pens and inhalers, please pick it up from Mrs. Foronato on Monday June 17 or Tuesday, June 18. Medication will only be released to a parent or guardian, not a student. All medication left after June 18 will be disposed of. Please call Mrs. Foronato at 248-341-6002 prior to stopping in the office to make sure she is available to release the medication to you.

YEARBOOKS SOLD OUT

Each year a supply of extra yearbooks is shipped along with those that were pre-ordered by students in the fall. Those extra yearbooks are sold on a first come, first served basis, and all have SOLD OUT. Returning families, please watch the Lancer Updates in the fall for information on ordering yearbooks for your student next school year.

PTO NEWS

Thank you BHMS families for your outstanding support of the PTO, and for all of the volunteer efforts this year!

FOR FAMILIES OF CURRENT BHMS 7TH GRADERS (RISING 8TH GRADERS)

Your current 7th grade student has the opportunity to take an exciting and educational trip to Washington, D.C. with classmates next year as a BHMS 8th grader. Mr. Neuwirth and Mr. Weisenberger will be leading the group, with additional staff members attending as needed. The trip is scheduled for April 15 - 17, 2020. BHMS uses the professional travel company, Student Adventures, to plan every aspect of the trip. This is a wonderful opportunity for 8th grade students to visit the nation's capital, and learn firsthand about the amazing historical figures, landmarks and events that make this country great. The price of $710 covers virtually everything on the trip - motor coach transportation, hotel accommodations, most meals, sightseeing admissions, and medical insurance. The trip is available next year on a first-come, first-served basis, so please watch for sign-up information in the fall if your student is interested participating. Don't want to wait until next year?  Registration is live now and available on a first-come, first-served basis.  Please click here for trip itinerary and registration information.

This information is being provided now so you can encourage your student to do lawn mowing, dog walking, baby/pet sitting, yard work or other summer work to earn money toward their trip. Please refer questions about the trip to either Mr. Neuwirth or Mr. Weisenberger, who look forward to coordinating a fun and educational adventure that your student will remember for a lifetime!

PTO PILOTING PRE-ORDER SUPPLY PROGRAM FOR INCOMING 5TH GRADERS

The BHMS PTO is piloting an online school supply ordering program for incoming 5th graders only, through a company called 1st Day School Supplies. This is an optional program, and will contain the same list of supplies that will be posted for 5th graders on the BHMS website this summer. It is simply a quick and easy way to purchase suggested school supplies without going to the store. The deadline to order supplies through the program is June 30. Just click on this link and provide your information. If a zip code is required, use the BHMS zip code of 48302. Orders will be delivered on the day of the BHMS 5th Grade Orientation, which is on August 23 (details on the orientation will follow over the summer). Please refer questions about the supply ordering program to Ban Kizy.

MYP COORDINATOR'S CORNER by Kathy Janelle

This week's MYP Coordinator's Corner features two articles. The first article highlights and includes student feedback about the recent 7th grade "water walk", which so inspired one 7th grader that he donated $1,000 of his Bar Mitzvah money toward a safe water program. The second, from Kathy Janelle, MYP Coordinator/IB Teacher Leader, discusses the June MYP Learner Profile of being reflective.

REMINDER ABOUT NUT RESTRICTIONS AT BHMS

Please remember that BHMS IS A PEANUT and TREE NUT RESTRICTED BUILDING, 24-HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. There are students in the building who are highly allergic to peanuts and all kinds of tree nuts, and their well-being is of concern. Students, parents/guardians or visitors should not bring items containing peanuts, tree nuts or products derived from nuts of any type into the building. This includes items given to the office staff, to teachers, for classrooms, bake sales, end-of-sports or club parties or any other occasion. Thank you so much for your consideration.

2019-2020 Online Registration
The Online Back to School Registration process will begin on Monday, July 1, 2019, for the 2019-2020 school year. If your child plans to attend school (Kindergarten - 12th grade) in Bloomfield Hills Schools for the 2019-2020 school year, you are required to register annually.

Young Advocates Changing Food Services Procedures
Young advocates are changing not only procedures at Bloomfield Hills Schools (BHS), but also the future of our earth. India Woll Stewart, a 7th grader at Bloomfield Hills Middle School (BHMS), presented an idea to BHS Food Services to switch from styrofoam trays to a more sustainable version, and the idea was enthusiastically received. As a result, BHMS students have started using compostable trays made of sugar cane and the idea is expected to be implemented district-wide next fall.

Me to We Donates to Worthy Foundations

Through Spirit Week fundraisers (colors for a cause ribbons, warrior scarves, coin wars and t-shirts) Me to We was able to donate $800 each to the Danny Did Foundation - in Memory of Hayden Adele Veillette, Alex's Lemonade Stand - in Memory of EHMS 5th grader, Glen Cabbell, and David's Dream Team - in Honor of David Kontry (husband of beloved former BHMS French teacher, Lori Kontry).

These donations are in addition to the nearly $1000 dollars raised for women in Kenya through Rafiki Sales, and over $2500 raised by the 7th grade to build wells for communities in need through WE Villages' Global Initiatives.

There were countless other campaigns and initiatives that our Me to We Club and Academic Extension classes accomplished this year, all through your assistance. BHMS and students should be incredibly proud of the powerful and positive impacts they've made on their world this year! Thank you for your support!

Water Walk
The 7th grade World Cultures class at Bloomfield Hills Middle School recently learned about the Global Water Crisis and raised over $2,500 for the cause. Some students also participated in a Water Walk modeled after children in Africa who walk 2+ miles carrying 5-gallon pails filled with water.
