The Black Hawk Hall of Fame expanded significantly at Bloomfield Hills High School on Friday, September 20, 2024, as four individuals and four teams from the sports of tennis, swimming, and golf were recognized for their outstanding achievements as Black Hawk student athletes.
The Johnson Nature Center recently hosted a successful and enjoyable Forest to Table strolling dinner, featuring beautiful scenery, entertainment, food and drink to celebrate the educational space.
PREP students enjoyed cider, donuts, and socialization at their first field trip of the new school year! Learning about how the water wheel works, and sharing donuts with staff, builds understanding and community.
Bloomfield Hills High School Black Hawks build community by meeting in small cohorts of students in newly formed “Nests.” The goal of these “Nest” groups is to improve school spirit, build school culture and pride, meet and connect with students across grade levels, and provide students with an additional adult in the building who can be a source of support.

Sajan Doshi, a grade 11 student at International Academy and Bloomfield Hills High School varsity tennis player, co-founded the Lil Aces Tennis Academy in Summer 2023 to offer free tennis lessons to students across Oakland County.

If your child rides the bus, be sure you're connected with the Stopfinder app. Invitations will be emailed directly from Stopfinder on August 28 - so check your inbox for details on how to get connected. If there are delays or changes with routes, we will be sending notifications through the app.
Although this benefit is available to all 4- to 26-year-olds who are enrolled in the Bloomfield Hills Schools, applications will still need to be filled out for families with students in this age group that qualify. For example, if your household size is 4 people, and your annual income is $57,720 or less, please apply.

As part of their integrated science and social studies units, first grade students hatched chicks in class, and learned all about birds during their field trip to Bowers Farm.
The Road Commission for Oakland County will be replacing two culverts under Long Lake and Eastways roads. Long Lake Road will close after July 4 and re-open by August 16. Eastways Road will close after August 17 and re-open in September.
Bloomfield Hills High School sport teams are gearing up for post-season play.
Bowers Farm celebrated the beginning of Open Barn season earlier this month. Available for members and non-members alike, hours are as follows: Fridays 4 - 8 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Store: Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Bloomfield Hills Schools’ second grade students have been getting their hands dirty while visiting Bowers Farm during spring field trips to explore the science behind plants. Farm staff help students explore what plants need to thrive, climate and weather impact, biodiversity importance, the food they provide, and how to manage unwanted species.
Kidz Zone is Bloomfield Hills Schools’ before and after school care program and is available at our four elementary schools. The Kidz Zone application window is May 20 at 6 p.m. to May 27 at 6 p.m. Families will receive notice of their application status the week of June 10. If an application is submitted following May 27, you will be placed on a waitlist and be notified of status within 10 business days of the application being received.

Students from North and South Hills Middle School Forensics Teams excelled at the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association state tournament on April 27, 2024.
This past weekend, 39 members of the BHHS Forensics Team concluded their 2024 season at the Michigan Interscholastic Forensic Association State Finals, achieving a strong 4th place overall among Class A schools with two students winning 1st place in their respective categories.

Each year, several Bloomfield Hills High School students attend classes in Royal Oak and Pontiac, through Oakland Schools Technical Campus, to explore unique electives.
First grade students in Bloomfield Hills Schools had a blast on a field trip back in time to the Wing Lake Schoolhouse. The one-room schoolhouse is the oldest school in Bloomfield. On the field trip, first grade students participated in four rotating stations: reading, writing, games, and chores.

At the Michigan DECA State Career Development Conference, 47 students from BHHS showcased their skills and talents in 22 different events across the core business areas of marketing, management, finance, entrepreneurship, and hospitality. The dedication and hard work of these students were evident as they displayed exemplary performance and professionalism throughout the conference.
Eleven BHHS Biff Radio students recently attended the Michigan Association of Broadcasters “Michigan Student Broadcast Awards” and five students brought home first place awards.
A total of 221 students in grades 11 and 12 take IB World Religions. Co-taught by history teacher Matt MacLeod and psychology teacher Andrea McCoy, who has a background in visual arts, the course provides students with a range of lenses and tools through which they can understand the wide range of content. English Language Department staff coordinated a multilingual family event, hosted at Bloomfield Hills High School, to help families connect, share culture, and learn about area resources.
In 1982, the West Hills Junior High School Social Studies classes buried a time capsule and left maps to help someone discover its location. The time capsule and associated maps were lost to time, until Summer 2023, when BHS Physical Plant Services crews unearthed a beat-up garbage can while installing the new lower elementary playground.
Each year, the Bloomfield Hills Schools Parent-Teacher Organization Council partners with a local organization for Make a Difference Day, which is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of October. This year’s partnership with Humble Design in Pontiac focused on assisting in the effort to end homelessness.
Bloomfield Hills PREP students are working hard on their microbusiness offerings. New this year, students are creating epoxy resin projects for purchase.
Recently high school and PREP students participated in the Michigan State Police program known as the Vulnerable Impaired Persons initiative. Designed to enhance the security and support for individuals with disabilities, this state police database ensures that their vital information is readily accessible to law enforcement.

Across Bloomfield Hills Schools this past semester, students have been hard at work to help our schools receive the No Place for Hate designation. An initiative of the Anti-Defamation League, No Place for Hate involves students leading the way, designing and implementing three activities over the course of a school year to gain the designation.

TreeSchool, our nature-preschool program at Johnson Nature Center, provides children ages 3-4 with 40 acres of forest, pond, and prairie to explore. Children develop lifelong skills through meaningful play and learning experiences.
Giving is contagious in Bloomfield Hills Schools this season, creating smiles on the faces of those who receive and those who give.
Bloomfield Hills Schools Robotics Teams once again demonstrated continued success in reaching the highest levels of competition in the State of Michigan. Students programmed and built functioning robots, completed community service, and promoted STEM and robotics during their fall season.
Bloomfield Hills Schools third and fourth grade students found a new class on their specials schedule for the 2022-2023 school year: STEAM and Innovation! STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics, is being launched at all BHS elementary schools.
The Bloomfield Hills High School Orchestra program recently received a very generous donation from an anonymous, single donor. Over the last three years, by way of the Bloomfield Hills Schools Foundation, this donor has given $180,000 to the program, with $65,000 gifted in 2022. The donation is being used for special guest clinicians, small group sectional instruction, and free private lessons.
You may have seen Superintendent Pat Watson visiting our middle schools, joining in conversations at the elementary schools, substitute teaching at BHHS, or attending high school sporting events. Watson is a well-known smiling face around Bloomfield Hills Schools. “I like to see our students and staff engaging in the learning process,” said Watson. “Seeing students grow as learners and individuals is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.”
The students in the Bloomfield Hills Schools PREP program have a full workshop that can be used to teach both work and leisure skills. Each season, the students create wooden gift items that are available for purchase by the community. “Our PREP students have been hard at work crafting and creating throughout November and have items ready for sale” said PREP Teacher Russ McCall. “All items are student-made and ready to take home.”
On December 3, students, families, and guests joined together to celebrate the opening of the “Our Natural World” art exhibit, featuring K-12 student artists from Bloomfield Hills Schools and Birmingham Public Schools. The students completed a massive collaborative painting project featuring 40 paintings based on the theme of nature. The paintings will be exhibited through May 31, 2023 in the Youth Room of the Baldwin Public Library, located at 300 West Merrill Street, Birmingham, MI, 48009.
To minimize disruption to the educational process, the goal is always to keep school in session unless road conditions, severe cold or other weather conditions pose a significant risk to student safety.
If school is cancelled, the district will notify families and staff in the following four ways:

There have been thousands of participants in Coach Genevieve Caffelli’s SNAP Flag Football League over the years, and many returned this past holiday weekend to play in the 5th Annual Gratitude Bowl held at the Bloomfield Hills High School football field. The event takes place each year on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Students at Way Elementary came to school at night in their pajamas to enjoy cookies, milk, and a literacy event. The event, Books at Bedtime, was held in conjunction with several other activities during the week of the Way Book Fair. Special guests including Bloomfield Township Library Youth Services Librarian Patricia Ballard, Way Principal Michelle Fiebke-Lang, and Way Media Center Specialist Cindy Zervos read books to the many participants. Even Marge, Way’s new therapy dog, was there to hear the stories!

The Tuesday following Thanksgiving is nationally recognized as “Giving Tuesday,” a day that encourages people to give back in whatever ways they can. The Eichenhorn family did just that for Bloomfield Hills High School, providing a grand total of $6,000 to the WBFH (the BIFF) radio station, the choir program, and the theater department, through a donation to the Bloomfield Hills Schools Foundation.
Community service is an integral part of the Bloomfield Hills High School Student Leadership and Lead 9 classes. The student leaders are required as part of their coursework to collaborate on one community service project per quarter.
After reading “Balloons Over Broadway” by author Melissa Sweet, Way Elementary third-grade students designed robot floats for their own Thanksgiving parade. According to Media Center Specialist Cindy Zervos, the students first discussed how Tony Sarg designed floats and balloons for the initial Macy's Thanksgiving Day parades. Then, the students held discussions on how Sarg anticipated possible problems and reviewed how improvements were made year after year. “Students were given time to design, create, test, and change a float that could be transported down our own parade route on an Ozobot,” said Zervos. “The Ozobots were color-coded to move, zigzag, and spin down the route.” Students shrieked in delight as their robotic creations came to life and moved along the parade route.
Students who are part of the full International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at BHHS spent time at the Nature Center as part of their Group 4 project. This is a collaborative and multidisciplinary activity which encourages science students to appreciate the environmental, social, and ethical implications of science.
As November draws to a close and we complete the month of gratitude, I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage us to continue expressing gratitude throughout the year. Novelist and children's author Kyo Maclear wrote, “Each day brings new opportunities, allowing you to constantly live with love—be there for others—bring a little light into someone's day. The Bloomfield Hills High School Performing Arts department is excited to present Newsies, Disney’s musical that was a 1992 film and a Tony-award winning Broadway production from 2012 - 2014. The show is set in 1899 in New York City, and presents a fictionalized version of the newsboys strike. The characters provide inspiration to cast, crew, and audience members alike. Nicky Little (grade 12) who plays Jack Kelly, shares, “The characters' persistence is incredibly inspiring. In spite of all their hardships, they continue to fight for what they want even though the odds are stacked against them. This message of persistence is incredibly relevant because life can be challenging. Even today, kids are protesting for what is right, and although the problems are different, the drive is the same.”
Farm Bureau is a partner of Bowers School Farm. Providing both technical expertise and grant funding, Oakland County Farm Bureau has been integral to supporting Bowers and our Bloomfield Hills High School Food Agriculture and Natural resources program since our charter date in 1981. Liza Wiemer, author of “The Assignment,” visited Bloomfield Hills Middle School to speak about their book, the history of the Holocaust, and the power of students to make a difference. The presentation “Allyship and Upstanders: Helping Students Speak Up Against Injustice and Hate” was sponsored by the Detroit Anti-Defamation League.
Students have been learning about Hispanic Heritage Month as part of their Spanish classes. Each grade and school had multiple areas of focus, providing students with a broader understanding of Spanish language and Hispanic culture.
Lone Pine students and staff may be well familiar with Rena Kirshenbaum, a beloved BHS staff member for many years. Recently retired, Kirshenbaum, and husband Ken, a retired scientist, have embarked upon a new adventure: sharing their love of science with elementary school students.
Oakland Schools encourages families to view the art exhibits and celebrate the featured students’ artistic and creative achievements currently on display at their office. The display will be available until November 30, 2022. Art teachers from every Bloomfield Hills School chose exemplary pieces of student art to be showcased.
West Hills students in 6th grade put their skills, knowledge, and creativity to the test by making and then playing board games in math class. From games resembling Jenga, Battleship, Sorry, and Candy Land, to totally original creations, the students embraced the challenge of embedding math concepts into their game designs. Student Nil Hellin notes, “In the process of making the game, we made some mistakes. And when we fixed it, we made a very fun game. You can’t make a game without making some mistakes!”
Recently, students in grade 9 read The Catcher in the Rye, and attended a field experience along the trails at the JNC. Along the way, JNC guides discussed the book with the students and provided journal prompts about the concept of change, as well as the exploratory theme in literature called “the Hero’s Journey,” in which students think about where the protagonist is born, where they are from, and where they are going.
BHS teachers and students took advantage of the free field trips offered by the DIA in order to visit the Ofrendas el Día de los Muertos exhibit.
This year's Fall Festival at Bowers School Farm hosted its first-ever Scarecrow Contest. Students, families, community partners, and organizations across Bloomfield Hills were invited to participate and put their scarecrow-making abilities to the test. The requirements for entering were simple: be creative and use your imagination.
Acclaimed artist Hubert Massey and celebrated photographer S. Kay Young attended a recent unveiling of a mosaic mural installation at the Bloomfield Hills Schools district office. The art was created by the artists and students in the PREP program.
The Bloomfield Hills Schools Deaf and Hard of Hearing program has once again had a positive impact on its surrounding community. In order to spread awareness and support our D/HH students, in early October, the D/HH program offered a professional learning opportunity for transportation staff within Oakland County.
Nearly 100 representatives from universities, community colleges, trade schools, and the military were stationed throughout the BHHS main gym at tables filled with colorful brochures. Parents and students were able to meet face-to-face with admissions representatives to ask questions and get information.
Local high school students were invited to attend a civic talk with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris. Coordinated by the Michigan Governor's office, a total of thirty VIP tickets were available to students across Oakland County, of which seven Bloomfield Hills High School and International Academy students were invited.
The sights and sounds of fall were in the air for the recent Superintendent Hike at the Johnson Nature Center. What began as a rainy morning turned into a beautiful day where community members from Bloomfield Hills and beyond joined Bloomfield Hills Schools Superintendent Patrick Watson on a slow hike through the Nature Center.
The Bloomfield Hills Schools PTO Council’s Health and Wellness Committee provides support, information, and workshops to uplift and educate our community.
Eastover Elementary School recently held their very first all-school assembly for this school year. Students and staff gathered in the gymnasium to learn about and celebrate SOAR, their Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) framework. PBIS is a proactive approach schools use to promote positive behavior, focusing on prevention, not punishment. SOAR, which is specific to Eastover, stands for Self-Control, On-Task, Acceptance, and Respect.
Students in the Bloomfield Hills Schools PREP program are now welcoming guests at the Booth Center on Wing Lake Road. The facility houses BHS departments such as Athletics/Recreation, Enrollment, and Human Resources, plus there are often package deliveries. There was not a building receptionist, so BHS Paraeducator Michelle Schwab came up with the idea to have the PREP students trained in that role. The plan was soon approved by the administration team, and the students began their new jobs.
BHS uses an app for your phone or tablet that connects you to our busing system called StopFinder. It shows the scheduled drop off and pick up times, location, and bus numbers. It also provides real-time information on the location of your child’s bus by creating your own alert zones with GeoAlerts, which will send notifications when the bus is near the stop.
Bloomfield Hills Schools once again has been named one of the top-rated districts in the state by Niche.com. The International Academy ranked as the number one Michigan public high school with an A+ Overall ranking and an A+ in Academics. Bloomfield Hills High School also received an A+ Overall rating and A+ Academics rating. In addition, BHHS was one of just 154 Michigan public schools that earned a GreatSchools College Success Award in 2022.
Every fall, all the schools in BHS collaborate on a district-wide community service project. Over the years, our school communities have supported various entities and completed different tasks, but each year the project entails an element of collected donations, combined with an in-person day of volunteering, which culminates on the nationally recognized day, Make A Difference Day. Each year, Make a Difference Day falls on a Saturday in late October. This year’s beneficiary is Micah 6, a Pontiac-based organization that supports locally-grown food for residents.
More than 1,300 hours of service were spent at The Children's Center and Downtown Boxing Gym in Detroit, as well as Forgotten Harvest Farm in Fenton by International Academy students in grade 11.
Summer 2022 was a major construction period at North Hills Middle School, Bloomfield Hills Middle School, Conant Elementary School, and Way Elementary School, with $30 million in construction being accomplished.

The recognition from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer highlights the outstanding accomplishments of the team in winning the Division 1 State Championship this past June.

Bloomfield Hills Schools received therapy dogs in the 2021-22 school year, with two serving the Lone Pine and West Hills School communities for most of the year. More recently, therapy dogs have joined Bloomfield Hills Middle and East Hills Middle Schools. The value of the therapy dog program extends beyond the single school communities in which they’re placed; a collaboration with the PREP program is one example.
The Bloomfield Hills Schools Foundation announced the recipients of the Spring 2022 BHSF Grants. Max Mojica is starting kindergarten. This is something that hardly seemed possible just a few years ago, but, due to the interventions of the Early On Program through Bloomfield Hills Schools, Max made extensive progress. “There are SO many amazing people,” gushed parent Ericka Mojica, “I cannot say enough wonderful things about them. As soon as they sent me the email saying that he is not going to need anything going into kindergarten, and that he is ready for full-on kindergarten, I’m not going to lie, I got teary-eyed.”

In the 2021-22 school year, Bloomfield Hills Schools will have two new staff members at Lone Pine Elementary and West Hills Middle Schools - therapy dogs! The first puppy is temporarily named Daisy, and a second dog will begin training as a BHS dog soon.
Children at Bloomin’ Preschools learn all about pets and some classrooms even have live animals that pay extended visits. The pets have varied behaviors and habitats which gives the preschoolers opportunities to explore diversity.
The PREP staff held an outdoor celebration for all the program’s students to honor their accomplishments this year. The partygoers also provided a heartfelt send-off for Stephen Eckert who marked a successful completion of the program with special gifts from the staff and students.
On Thursday, May 27, Bloomfield Hills Schools held its third annual district-wide Multicultural Celebration, hosted at the BHHS Legacy Courtyard. This outdoor event was a beautiful celebration of the diversity of students and their families across our schools.

The weekend of April 24 was an exciting one in many Bloomfield Hills School family households, as middle school Forensics students performed their well-rehearsed pieces for three rounds of judging in the virtual Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association (MIFA) Spring Forensics Tournament
Middle School Orchestra Director Nat Erde provided a fun and educational challenge to Orchestra students at West Hills and East Hills Middle Schools recently: create a remix, or variation, and present it in a video. For this project, 6th - 8th grade Orchestra students chose a song or exercise from class and altered two aspects of the music, such as key signature, tempo, rhythm, articulation, or dynamics.
The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) has given Bloomfield Hills Schools top honors for financial reporting for the 21st year in a row.

Tuesday, April 13, was the beginning of Ramadan in 2021, in North America. Bloomfield Hills Schools has a long tradition of collaboration and celebration with our Muslim community. Ramadan Mubarak, to all of our BHS families who celebrate!
The Nature Center re-opened for walking on Monday, June 1, 2020. No restrooms are available and we ask that you maintain social distancing. The trails will be open daily from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on weekends (closed July 4).
Fourth grade students in Bloomfield Hills Schools participated in a hands-on activity based workshop, which travels across Oakland County. The main emphasis of this workshop is to help students become more aware and empathetic toward those with differences.
Celebrating Differences Day is a beautiful celebration of the many ways that students learn. Beginning with classroom chalk talks to inspire students to think about kindness and inclusion, the learning continued with presentations by speakers on different topics for each grade level.
The BHS Johnson Nature Center is known for maple syrup, the walking trails and pond, and the hawks and deer that reside there. However, you might not know that it is also a key partner in teaching the Next Generation Science Standard (NGSS) to Bloomfield Hills Schools students. All K-7th grade students take two field trips each year to the 35-acre preserve.
The grounds are crisscrossed with more than two miles of pleasant trails. Trails are open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - dusk and Saturday & Sunday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Recreation Updates
For the first time, the Bloomfield Hills High School Dance Program is hosting a youth clinic for dancers in kindergarten through 8th grade! This clinic will take place on Friday, December 13 and consist of a 3 1/2 hour experience with the BHDT JV and Varsity Dancers/Coaches. Participants will be learning a BHDT style dance routine with poms from the JV and Varsity dancers and then perform at a Boys Varsity Basketball game the following Friday, December 20th. Participants will also receive a branded clinic t-shirt and their very own set of poms to remember this amazing experience! The purpose of this clinic is to build self-esteem, coordination and to gain more performance experience!
