Bloomfield Hills Schools welcomes students from all over the world. Our goal is to expedite English language learning and enhance each child's acculturation into United States schools. We serve English learners in several ways.
Students who are on the journey of becoming proficient in English receive language and academic support from certified English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers and paraprofessionals in addition to their general education classroom instruction. English language support continues until students reach English proficiency as determined by annual assessments.
Early elementary English learners benefit from having a classroom teacher specially trained in working with English Learner students. Students participate in interactive, language-rich general education classroom instruction with support from a certified ESL teacher. BHS prides itself on its student-centered approach to education. A focus on giving each child a strong sense of belonging and developing classroom community is an integral part of our culture in Bloomfield Hills Schools.
“Newcomer” English Learners, those who have recently arrived to US Schools and in the beginning stages of learning English, are supported in a variety of ways. Elementary newcomer English Learners are supported in the language-rich environment of their home schools.
Middle school newcomer English Learners may be invited to attend West Hills Middle School where students are cohorted to support the unique needs of middle school learners. Middle and High school English Learners may be enrolled in sheltered instruction in English Language Arts and select social studies classes taught by highly qualified staff for English learners. As the students' English proficiency increases so does the opportunity to join their English speaking peers for additional grade-level academic instruction.
Families are notified when students are eligible for ESL services and are encouraged to be involved in the education of their children.
As we continue to develop our return to school plans, we recognize the importance of having one place for students, staff, and families to view information as it becomes available. Knowing there are still many unanswered questions related to the Governor's plan and how Bloomfield Hills Schools will operate in the 2020-2021 school year, please bookmark this website as an ongoing resource. This website will continuously be updated as new information becomes available and additional developments unfold.
