The International Baccalaureate Programmes of Bloomfield Hills Schools

With its international focus, the International Baccalaureate Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes help students develop academically, socially, emotionally and culturally as they grow to become citizens of the world.
Bloomfield Hills Schools is proud to become the first school district in Michigan to offer fully-authorized IB programmes from preschool through 12th grade.

The International Baccalaureate Organization promotes the sharing of best practices to introduce a multicultural understanding and international credibility to its curriculum. The IBO requires consistency in staff development and programme assessment at all of its international schools throughout the world.

Primary Years Programme (PYP)

Bloomin' Preschools Conant, Bloomin' Preschools Lone Pine, Conant Elementary, Lone Pine Elementary and West Hills Middle School are fully-authorized Primary Years Programme schools of the world-recognized IBO.

The all-inclusive PYP is designed for students in grades Pre-K through 5. The Programme is based on inquiry and focuses on the total growth of the developing child, drawing on the research and best practices from a range of international schools. The PYP curriculum is developed to create relevant, engaging, challenging and significant work for young learners and its international focus addresses the needs of our diverse student population.

Middle Years Programme (MYP)

Bloomfield Hills Middle School, East Hills Middle School, West Hills Middle School, and Bloomfield Hills High School are fully-authorized Middle Years Programme schools of the world-recognized IBO.

The MYP is available to all students in grades 6-10 and provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum framework. The curriculum is designed around eight subject groups: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, design, mathematics, arts, science, and physical education and health. The units of study begin with a guiding question, through which students can connect their learning to the world outside the classroom. The Programme requires students to participate actively and responsibly in preparation for their life in an ever-changing world.

Diploma Programme (DP)

Bloomfield Hills High School and the International Academy are fully-authorized International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme schools. The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year program in which students can earn an internationally recognized IB Diploma. This rigorous academic program prepares students for university life and encourages them to ask challenging questions, learn how to learn, develop a strong sense of their own identity and culture, and develop the ability to communicate with and understand people from other cultures.

This week's MYP Coordinator's Corner features two articles. The first article highlights and includes student feedback about the recent 7th grade "water walk", which so inspired one 7th grader that he donated $1,000 of his Bar Mitzvah money toward a safe water program. The second, from Kathy Janelle, MYP Coordinator/IB Teacher Leader, discusses the June MYP Learner Profile of being reflective.

IB Class Features Faith Experts and Field Trips

From Hindu priests to Muslim imams to Zen Buddhist teachers to Jewish rabbis to Catholic priests, all have hosted students from the Bloomfield Hills High School IB World Religions class at their religious sites and visited the class to speak on their religions. "One of the things we try to do is take advantage of the incredible religious diversity in this community. Literally, we have all the major world religions within 20 minutes. Instead of me teaching everything or the kids presenting to me, I have local religious leaders come in," explained teacher Matt MacLeod. "This is something that most public schools don't have, and you just don't get other places. It promotes understanding and diversity."
