BYA - Bloomfield Youth Assistance

Counseling /Casework Services

Bloomfield Youth Assistance was formed in 1967 to help strengthen youth and families and prevent delinquency and neglect through community involvement.

Like its Youth Assistance counterparts throughout Oakland County, local volunteers develop and provide prevention-based programs and professional staff offer counseling services that promote positive growth experiences and enhance home and community relationships.

BYA is sponsored by the Bloomfield Hills School District, Bloomfield Township, and the Oakland County Circuit Court-Family Division with funding supplied through the Oakland County Board of Commissioners.

BYA is served by a caseworker, provided by the Oakland County Circuit Court-Family Division. Professional, family-centered counseling and referral services are offered to Bloomfield Hills School District students and their families. Counseling/casework services are confidential, and are initiated by referrals from schools, police, court officials, as well as parents with concerns about their child. There is a $25.00 processing fee for this service.

Youth Recognition

Each year, Bloomfield Youth Assistance honors students from our community who have proven to be outstanding citizens. We do this because we believe that positive behaviors are often overlooked. These young people serve as role models for their peers; they reassure the community that the future is in good hands.

A candidate may be nominated for an award under any of the following five categories: performance of an act of heroism; providing exceptional service to an individual; achievement by an individual based upon overcoming a personal challenge and setting an example in assisting others; initiation of a new program or project to help others.

The winners are honored at our annual Outstanding Youth Citizen Awards Ceremony in the spring.

Enrichment

Bloomfield Youth Assistance provides need-based scholarships to assist families with the cost of an enrichment experience, such as camp, or an appropriate skill building activity. BYA offers a limited number of scholarships to students residing within the Bloomfield Hills School District.

We welcome contributions to the enrichment fund from individuals or groups.

Our strength as a community depends on our commitment as individuals.

Volunteer opportunities exist whether you can spare an hour per week, a few hours per month, or help during certain times of the year. The mission of Oakland County Youth Assistance's Mentors Plus program is to provide the youth of Bloomfield, ages 6 to 16, with a one-on-one meaningful mentoring relationship with a caring adult. The intent is to build a trusting relationship between the adult volunteer and a child that will enrich and benefit a child's life. Volunteers are screened, trained, and interviewed by Oakland County Youth Assistance staff. Mentors commit to spending as little as a few hours a week with their mentee doing things they enjoy.

Area Children Need You

As a Mentors Plus volunteer, you'll become a friend and an invaluable role model for a youngster who needs you. Just an hour a week can make a lasting difference in a child's life. Volunteers make a one-year commitment.
