Elementary
Elementary School Curriculum
School is a time of tremendous wonder, discovery and growth for children in kindergarten through grade five. Our young learners engage in a comprehensive educational program that develops their thinking and communication skills and teaches them the joy of learning.
Exemplary elementary school curricula is delivered at Conant (K-4), Eastover (K-4), Lone Pine (K-3), Way (K-4), BHMS (5), EHMS (5), and WHMS (4-5). This includes instruction in language arts, math, science, social studies, Spanish, computer technology, art, music, and physical education. We teach the Common Core State Standards for math and English Language Arts and the Michigan state standards (content expectations) for all other subject areas. Faculty utilize multiple learning strategies to enhance children's individual abilities.
Small class sizes provide an ideal environment for young learners to receive individualized attention.
Conant, Lone Pine, and WHMS are fully-authorized International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme schools, and Lone Pine also offers a newcomer's English Language Development program. Way and Eastover are Project Zero's Visible Thinking schools.
Visible Thinking
Elementary learners attending Eastover or Way Elementary are developing lifelong thinking skills through the implementation of Visible Thinking, a research-based teaching framework from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Visible Thinking engages students in in-depth thinking, inquiry-based learning opportunities, and deeper subject matter learning. Thinking routines, templates to scaffold thinking, are integrated into and across all content areas. Through the implementation of Visible Thinking, Way and Eastover have become places in which a group's collective, as well as individual thinking is valued, visible, and actively promoted as part of the day-to-day experiences. In simplest terms, both Eastover and Way nurture a culture that values teaching for understanding, focusing students on the learning, encouraging deep learning strategies, promoting independence, and developing a growth mindset.
International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programmes
International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programmes in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan Conant Elementary, Lone Pine Elementary and West Hills Middle School are fully authorized Primary Years Programme (PYP) schools of the world-recognized International Baccalaureate Organization. PYP instruction focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world beyond. It encourages international-mindedness and a positive attitude to learning. A school's implementation of the PYP helps children develop academically, socially, emotionally, physically, and culturally, and effectively addresses the needs of a diverse student population.
Middle School
Middle School Curriculum
"Middle school is full of emotional change. By building bridges between school, home, and community, students develop skills important to healthy adolescent development." - Jason Rubel, EHMS Principal
Young adolescents discover and develop diverse interests and grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally. The combination of a secure environment and knowledgeable staff nurtures that development through academic challenge and creative stimulation.
Students receive the personal attention necessary to encourage habits of good citizenship through an average class size of 25 and a student/staff ratio of 12:1. Core subjects of math, science, reading, writing and social studies are team-taught in uninterrupted blocks of time in a true middle-school format. Students benefit from the wide variety of exploratory classes in world language, practical and fine arts, music, health, physical education, and computer technology. Special enrichment and support programs are available for students who learn at their own pace.
Middle Years Programme
All of our middle schools are fully-authorized International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme schools. The MYP is available to all students in grades 6-10 and provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary curriculum framework. The curriculum is designed around eight subject groups: language acquisition, language and literature, individuals and societies, mathematics, physical and health education, and design. The units of study begin with a guiding question, through which students can connect their learning to the world outside the classroom. The Programme requires students to participate actively and responsibly in preparation for their life in an ever-changing world.
In addition, West Hills Middle School houses our newcomer's English Language Development program, and East Hills and Bloomfield Hills Middle Schools offer a Deaf and hard of hearing program.
A wide variety of clubs and athletics is available to all BHS middle school students and vary annually depending on student interest. Recent studies suggest that participation in such activities enhances a student's scholastic ability. We teach the Common Core State Standards for math and English Language Arts and the Michigan state standards (content expectations) for all other subject areas.
