ELD (English Language Development)

World Map

Bloomfield Hills Schools welcomes students from all over the world. Our goal is to expedite English language development and enhance each child's acculturation into United States schools. We serve multilingual learners in several ways.

Students who are on the journey of becoming proficient in English receive language and academic support from certified English Language Development (ELD) teachers and paraprofessionals in addition to their general education classroom instruction. English language support continues until students reach English proficiency as determined by annual assessments.

Early elementary multilingual learners benefit from having a classroom teacher specially trained in working with multilingual learners.  Students participate in interactive, language-rich general education classroom instruction with support from a certified ELD teacher.  BHS prides itself on its student-centered approach to education.  A focus on giving each child a strong sense of belonging and developing classroom community is an integral part of our culture in Bloomfield Hills Schools.

“Newcomer” multilingual learners, those who have recently arrived to US Schools and in the beginning stages of learning English, are supported in a variety of ways.  Elementary newcomer multilingual learners are supported in the language-rich environment of their home schools

Middle school newcomer multilingual learners may be invited to attend West Hills Middle School where students are cohorted to support the unique needs of middle school learners.  Middle and high school multilingual learners may be enrolled in sheltered instruction in English Language Arts and select social studies classes taught by highly qualified staff for multilingual learners.  As the students' English proficiency increases so does the opportunity to join their English speaking peers for additional grade-level academic instruction.

Families are notified when students are eligible for ELD support and are encouraged to be involved in the education of their children.
