Youth Citizens Award - High School

2018 High School Nomination Letter

January 10, 2018

Each year Bloomfield Youth Assistance honors students from our community who have proven to be outstanding citizens. We do this because we believe that positive behaviors are often overlooked. These young people serve as models for their peers; they reassure our community that the future is in good hands.

We ask that you consider the young people with whom you have contact. Please take this opportunity to nominate one or more students who you feel have made a special contribution and for whom this honor would be meaningful. The specific areas to be considered are listed on the attached sheet. While we do not view this award as a competition, a selection process is necessary. Therefore, we urge nominators to keep their submissions confidential. Please attach your recommendation to the nomination form, giving your reasons why this nominee should be considered for this award. It is important that you give as much information as possible to substantiate your nomination so that the selection committee can evaluate your nominee fairly.

Candidates will be judged on the basis of the information you provide. Keep in mind that the selection committee must base its decision solely on the contents of the nominations submitted; therefore, the MORE you can elaborate on your candidate’s qualifications, the better the judges will be able to evaluate your nominee. You might want to consider strengthening your nomination by having a colleague who is acquainted with your nominee review your recommendation and provide additional information. A sample of a winning nomination can be provided upon request.

This year, the recognition dinner will be held at Bloomfield Hills High School on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, at 6:00 p.m.

NOMINATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2018.

Sincerely,

Bloomfield Youth Assistance

2018 High School Guidelines

1. A nominee must be a student residing in or attending a public, private or parochial school within Bloomfield Hills Schools boundaries. Nominations for groups of students will NOT be accepted. Each nominee will be judged on his/her individual merit and effort.

2. A nominator may be any adult or organization that wishes to submit the name of a deserving young person; however, nominations proposed by a family member will NOT be accepted.

3. A candidate may be nominated for an award under any of the following five categories:

a. Performance of an act of heroism
b. Provision of exceptional service within a club or organization
c. Provision of exceptional service to an individual
d. Achievement by an individual based upon overcoming a personal challenge and setting an example in assisting others (see #7 below)
e. Initiation of a new program or project to help others

4. Nominees will be judged on the basis of VOLUNTARY efforts only. Services performed with the expectation of receiving school credit, financial gain or personal recognition are not eligible for consideration.

5. This award is not given for academic achievement.

6. A limited number of recipients will be chosen and the decision of the selection committee is final.

7. If you wish to nominate a student under the category of “achievement by an individual based on overcoming a personal challenge and setting an example by assisting others,” you need to be aware that the specific personal challenge will be described during the tribute at the dinner. Therefore, if the student would be uncomfortable with this public declaration, please reconsider your nomination. We can keep some information confidential; however, the personal challenge is an ESSENTIAL element in this category.

8. The information submitted to the selection committee may be used in the narratives at the awards dinner (except financial need information which will only be used for scholarship selection). If there is some sensitive information that you would like the committee to be aware of but are reluctant to have mentioned at the awards program, you may contact Lisa Kucinski (LKucinski@bloomfield.org) or Paul Kolin (PKolin@bloomfield.org).

9. We’re going paperless! Nominations should be submitted electronically no later than Friday, February 23, 2018, via the nomination form below. Lisa Kucinski will confirm receipt of your nomination within 5 days. If you do not receive her confirmation email, please call the BYA office 248.341.5680.
