Bloomfield Hills Schools will no longer require masks at outdoor recess when there are fewer than 100 people gathered. BHS has received guidance from OCHD that allows districts to switch to a 10-day quarantine for a close contact with a known exposure to a COVID-19 positive person.

On Friday, April 9, 2021, Governor Whitmer addressed the state about COVID-19 trends and vaccination rollout, which included several suggestions, two of which are related to schools.

The first suggestion was a two-week pause on in-person learning for high school students. At this time, our high school students will continue to benefit from the flexibility to learn from home or in-person. This model has worked well for our students this past year, and on average, we see 40% daily attendance of in-person learners. Next week is standardized testing for high school students. Please remember that coming into BHHS to learn in-person or to complete the tests is a family decision, and there is no penalty for a student who does not engage in testing or who chooses to learn virtually. 

Our district and school administration teams have developed and implemented strict mitigation strategies focused on the safety of students, staff, and families. These measures include 3-6 feet of social distancing while in class, 6 feet of social distancing while eating, mask mandates, pre-screening, and will begin COVID-19 testing for student athletes next week. 

The second suggestion was a two-week pause on youth athletics. We will continue to offer athletic opportunities for those interested in participating. Participation is voluntary and a family decision. In accordance with the MDHHS mandated guidelines, COVID-19 testing will begin next week. Please read the COVID-19 Testing tab on the athletics website for detailed information. 

Bloomfield Hills Schools and the Oakland County Health Division continues to review all data and metrics daily. In conjunction with OCHD, we consider all classroom, school and sport scenarios on a case-by-case basis. There is no "on/off switch" for decisions and we have moved to targeted closures based on spread.

As our students and staff return to the classroom tomorrow after spring break, I’d be remiss if I didn’t reach out with a few thoughts and reminders. In the past few weeks we’ve seen COVID-19 numbers rise across our nation and within our state, and many within our own community are struggling with the concern and uncertainty surrounding the rising numbers. 

Dear Bloomfield Hills Schools Community,

This week, I spent time in the schools welcoming back our students who opted to return to full day in-person instruction. It was a week full of laughter and buzz, and one focused on establishing school day routines, which include proper handwashing, masking, and social distancing. I am proud of our students and staff who came together to have an incredible week.

This was also a week where we saw COVID-19 numbers rise across our nation, within our state, and within our community. So as our families embark on Spring Break, please be reminded that travel increases your chance of contracting and spreading COVID-19. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you do not travel domestically or internationally at this time and that you stay home to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. For more information, please visit CDC travel website. 

A reminder that in accordance with CDC guidelines, we are requiring that all students who travel internationally complete a mandatory 7-day quarantine, which begins the day that they return home from travel. Please complete the International Travel Form if you are travelling internationally. Please direct any questions about this to your building principal.

It is up to our community to help us remain in-person for learning by observing CDC recommended safety measures at home: keeping our children home when they are sick, washing hands often, not gathering in large groups, quarantining after international travel, wearing masks while in public and notifying the school about possible exposure. Our best laid plans will not be successful if community spread occurs.
