KEEPING STUDENTS SAFE AND HEALTHY

“We are very fortunate to have recreational time built into the day for our middle school students across the district,” shares Harleen Singh, Associate Principal of BHMS. “We’ve made some changes as we’ve noticed that some students were not eating a proper lunch or skipping it entirely and going straight to recreation time.”

The 6th-8th students have a total of thirty minutes for lunch and recreation. Each grade has its own dedicated 12-15 minutes for lunch (or longer if needed) and then the remaining amount is spent for recreation. All students go outside, weather permitting, to enjoy the fresh air and exercise. When the students are inside due to poor weather, the new process allows each grade to enjoy some extra space in the gym, field house, gateway spaces, and media center. James Schilp, 7th grade, exclaims, “It’s great, we have more room to play basketball since it is only my grade in the gym!”

The 5h grade elementary students have twenty minutes for lunch and then twenty minutes for recreation time. BHMS recently purchased additional board games in the media center for students that prefer a quieter space to enjoy with friends.
