On Friday, May 22, the Michigan Opera Theater Children’s Chorus (MOTCC) premiered a virtual opera, featuring six Bloomfield Hills Schools students. “The Very Last Green Thing,” composed by Cary John Franklin, is a show dedicated to teaching students ways to “green up” their world. The virtual opera was edited to 30 minutes, and features a dystopian future set in 2492, where plants have vanished from the earth, until one of the main characters discovers one in a time capsule.
The children’s opera was originally scheduled to be performed at the Fischer Theater in Detroit. After the announcement that the show would go on in a virtual format, MOTCC students spent countless hours to learn the opera at home, video tape themselves, and submit their tapes, to be compiled into this special performance. Over 400 video submissions by students and parents comprise the virtual opera. MOTCC Directors Acton and Hochella were instrumental in the creation of this endeavor.
Congratulations to Shanzay Ali and Joslyn Phillips (BHMS), Lucia Jolokai and Lily Tang (Way Elementary), and Ava and Elle Pierre (WHMS) for their participation in this special MOTCC performance! View the Opera!
