Dear Bloomfield Hills Schools Families, Staff, and Community,
The recent tragedy in Florida has influenced an increase of reports of suspicious behavior in schools and districts across the country. Bloomfield Hills Schools is no different. We want to assure you that we have been investigating each report immediately and thoroughly.
Our families have asked about the process used to investigate these and any future threats. While each case is different, there is a clear process that administrators across the district follow. First and foremost, we have a collaborative partnership with the Bloomfield Township Police and utilize the skills and expertise of this team when evaluating all safety and security threats.
Steps taken during an investigation include:
- Immediate and direct communication with local law enforcement
- Administrator interviews of all parties involved, including possible witnesses
- Removal of suspected student from school pending investigation (when appropriate)
- Communication between school administration and parent/guardian
- Communication between law enforcement and parent/guardian
- Home visit between law enforcement and student household (when appropriate)
Other steps taken will depend on the specifics of the threat, individual(s) involved, and a variety of other factors. When applicable, we may decide to utilize:
- Security camera footage
- Other technological forensic evidence (with support from district IT staff)
- Psychiatric evaluation
Please know that we are taking all threats seriously. Any and all students who make verbal statements or online posts related to school violence will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and the maximum limits of our Student Code of Conduct.
Please have a conversation with your child about the consequences associated with behavior that may be perceived as threatening, even if that wasn't the original intention. It's imperative students are intentional about their personal speech and conduct in school, social media posts and general online behavior, and cautious with the content of their jokes.
Safety is our number one priority and we are committed to investigating each incident thoroughly and with support from police and other law enforcement agencies.
That said, for legal reasons, we will not be able to share with you the details of any ongoing or completed investigations, including the results of interviews, police participation, and disciplinary action taken.
Second, I would like to encourage you not to repeat things you have heard, whether you believe them to be true or not. The ongoing spread of rumors is destructive to the culture we have worked together to construct.
Finally, as we do every day, we continue to work with local police to ensure student and staff safety at all times. You may see additional patrols and police activity at all of our schools. Please know that this is not because we believe there is any cause for concern, but rather a precautionary measure offered by Bloomfield Township Police given the Florida incident, media aftermath, and general increase in reported suspicious behavior.
Should you have any questions regarding safety and security, I would encourage you to visit our website www.bloomfield.org/safety to see if your question has been answered. If it has not, please submit your question(s) via the form on that page and we will reply as soon as we are able.
Thank you for your continued partnership.
