Michael Lu Earns 3rd at Mathcounts State Competition

BHMS 6th grader Michael Lu recently competed in the Mathcounts State Competition at the GM Warren Technical Center on March 9, 2019, and earned 3rd place! The top four students are eligible to represent their school and the entire state of Michigan at the Mathcounts National Competition in Orlando, Florida in May.

"As Michael's coach, I am extremely proud of Micheal's efforts and was overjoyed on Saturday when I watched him compete and earn 3rd place," expressed Jason Rice, BHMS math teacher.

Michael originally competed in the Oakland Chapter Competition and came in 4th place overall out of 158 students. From the chapter competitions held throughout the state, during which 1032 students competed, Michael's 4th place finish at the chapter level fell within the 136 state competitors. Michael also takes pre-calculus math at BHHS.

Micheal is the first student in the history of Bloomfield Hills Schools to earn a spot at the national competition since its existence in 1983. Way to go, Michael!

East Hills Book Swap

This month at East Hills a new tradition began.  The Book Swap.  March is reading month and some parents had the idea to hold a book swap to help celebrate reading month.  Last week students were encouraged to bring up to 5 books, at the 4th to 8th grade reading level, that they could then swap for other books on Monday, March 11th.  Roughly 70 students participated and brought books, and over 250 books were swapped.  This tradition was a fun way to get students to connect over reading, to read more, and to recycle books instead of throwing them away.  We hope that this tradition will continue on for many years and would like to wish everyone a very Happy Reading Month!
