Integrating Skype Into the Classroom

Skpe in the classroom; how technology helps students learn anywhere! East Hills 6th grade teacher, Mr. Gechter, seized the opportunity to enrich studying on population and migration by Skyping with Seattle Times reporter, Corinne Chin. Corinne has been all over the world. Chin has worked as a journalist in Washington D.C.; New York; Nairobi, Kenya; South Africa; and Brazil. Chin’s broad range of geographical studies and keen journalism provided valuable insights to Mr. Gecther’s class.

Ananya Singla, notes, “We were able to talk with her on a large screen through Skype. I asked her about her biggest story and if it was dangerous at times reporting in certain parts of the world. It was really cool talking with an expert and getting her perspective. She shared how important it is to get your information from a variety of sources. Each source may have a blind spot."

"Also, to obtain information from the community such as places like Next Door and Reddit”, adds fellow classmate, Will Clark.

Mr. Gechter’s class demonstrates how Skype is another avenue to engage students and provide a unique learning experience!
