Defeat the Label's Upstander Program - 6th and 7th Grades

This year marks our fifth year partnering with Defeat the Label with our sixth-grade students.  As we were unable to implement the program last year, we have extended the Upstander Program to our seventh-grade students. The Upstander curriculum provided by Defeat Label along with expert facilitation is helpful in building a school community with a common vocabulary aimed at giving our kids the tools necessary to recognize bullying and take action to eliminate it.

IB Learner Profile (Courageous)

“ Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen.” ~Winston Churchill

Embrace Courage to Take Action and Make Positive Change:

As we move into the second half of our school year, we continue to talk to students about ways to take action and reflect on those experiences.  Taking action to make our world a better place is a characteristic that we value in our school.  Service is one form of action. We define service as action that has a reach beyond the classroom with the purpose of making change.

This month we focus on helping our students become courageous thinkers who face challenges with determined and resilient mindsets. Courageous students learn to accept difficulties, set goals and act constructively.  They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs and are able to cope in the face of life’s adversities. Students who are courageous approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with confidence and forethought, and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They have the bravery to tell people what they think is right and the courage to consider different points of view.

Winter Recess Guidelines Reminder

West Hills holds an outdoor recess daily unless it is raining or temperatures drop below 10 degrees (or 10 degrees wind chill). It is essential that students arrive at school with appropriate winter weather play gear—warm coats, hats, gloves, scarves, snow pants, and other warm clothing. We recommend that all gear be clearly labeled with the student's first and last name.

2021 WHMS Unsung Heroes Concert

In November, West Hills hosted a 4th and 8th grade choir concert honoring veterans. Eighth grade choir teacher Eve Pierre and fourth grade music teacher Elena Yordanova led students in 10 musical pieces. Middle School media center specialist and military veteran Laura Amatulli provided a powerful and informative presentation, inspiring students and their families to listen deeply, share their stories, and be curious. Choir Director Pierre shares, “This program is dedicated to all the people who have served our country and protected our freedom, especially those who can not be here, for you are the music of our lives. You are our heroes.”
