JANUARY 19 - REMINDERS AND TIPS FOR A RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING

There are no significant changes to the previous hybrid schedule procedures. An overview of those procedures is below for anyone who is new to WHMS, or would like a reminder.

The 4th and 5th-grade schedules can be found at this LINK. The 6th, 7th & 8th-grade schedules (MT-ThF and W)  can be found at this LINK.

Please keep in mind that we are still in the first semester, so students will return to the hybrid cohort (e.g. “attendance group OR "AT") option that they previously attended. Second semester schedule changes will not take effect until February 1. 

  1. A daily pre-screening must be completed for each student before entering the building. Please complete the prescreening for your student before they leave home each school day by saving and using this LINK. 

  2. Students should bring their Chromebooks or other technology device to school each day. Please make sure that all devices are clearly marked with your student’s name. Students needing a Chromebook or who need to replace a faulty one should contact Ms. Spanos in the WHMS Media Center.  Her email address is aspanos@bloomfield.org. A member of the BHS Technology team will respond directly to you.

  3. 4th and 5th graders should continue to enter the rear of the building as they did this past fall. 6-8th-grade carpool students should be dropped at the front of our building near the flag pole and report directly to their classes. For families with children in multiple grades, only one drop point is required.

  4. Students should not be dropped off prior to 8:05 for the AM cohort, or prior to 12:10 for the PM cohort. Students using BHS transportation will remain on the buses until those times.

  5. Classes begin at 8:15 for the AM cohort and 12:20 for the PM cohort.

  6. Dismissal for the AM cohort is 11:00. Dismissal for the PM cohort is 3:05. Buses will run at both dismissal times. We will use a staggered dismissal by grade level.

  7. If your student is driven by car to or from school, please read the entire article below about Carpool Safety Guidelines.

  8. Students must wear a mask when entering, and at all times while inside WHMS. Neck gaiters, bandanas and face shields are not sufficient face coverings by themselves, but may be worn in addition to a face mask. Masks with valves are not permitted. Graphics on any face covering must be school appropriate.

  9. Absences from both remote and in-person classes must be phoned in directly to the attendance line at 248-341-6110. 

  10. As a reminder, due to COVID-19 there will be no visitors allowed in the building this year.

Half Day: January 29

Friday, January 29 is a half-day. Students should NOT report to the building on this day. Teaching will be remote for all students, regardless of their regular learning setting (in-person, remote, Bloomfield Virtual). Fourth and fifth-grade teachers will communicate their Friday, January 29 AM schedules directly to students and families (including specials if they are scheduled to meet). The Friday morning schedule for grades 6, 7 & 8 can be found by clicking HERE.  Middle school elective classes will not be held on Friday, January 29.

The 8th Graders at WHMS have been hard at work all semester working on their fall play! The students this year elected to produce a radio show inspired by the audio entertainment of the 1940’s. Each class produced two or three stories, which were rehearsed entirely in class and recorded on Zoom. After some editing and sound effects those shows are ready to share!

Welcome Mrs. Palmeri - WHMS Associate Principal

I am excited to join the Bloomfield Hills School District as the new Interim Associate Principal at West Hills Middle School. I will be joining a diverse community, which puts education first, and cultivates a pristine learning environment; supporting all students’ success.  I am grateful to step into this administrative role with intentions to honor the traditions that have been established and create new opportunities for our students moving forward.

8th-Grade Trip Update - January 5, 2021

January 8, 2021 was originally listed as the date you needed to decide to either confirm or cancel the trip for your child.  I have been working with Student Adventures to move the trip to June, which will provide us more time to determine whether or not the trip will proceed.  Additionally, we are exploring other options in order to ensure the greatest chance of having an 8th-grade trip experience for your child.  If you had not previously registered for the D.C. trip, you will still have an opportunity once we have finalized details for the revised trip.

As you have probably heard by now, Thursday night the BHS Board of Education approved a phased in return to in-person learning. I encourage you to read the full details of the return-to-learning plan as outlined in this Letter from the Superintendent.

Yearbook Order and Getting Your Pictures In!

The yearbook staff invites students and parents/guardians to submit photos for the yearbook. If you’ve got great photos of school and community events or you and your friends just having fun, we’d like to see them. Help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific yearbook!

Submit your photos online:

  1. Visit images.jostens.com
  2. Enter Login ID: 416053940
  3. Browse to select the photo(s) you wish to upload, click on “Select My Images.”
  4. Enter information about the photo and provide contact information in case the staff needs additional information.
  5. Click “Upload Chosen Images.”
