National Gun Violence Awareness Day

This year, National Gun Violence Awareness Day, also known as #WearOrange Day, is being observed on June 3, 2022.

The Bloomfield Hills Schools Board of Education is committed to gun safety and taking the necessary steps to keep students and the community safe from the tragic consequences of gun violence. On December 16, 2021 the Board unanimously voted in favor of a resolution to periodically disseminate materials stressing the importance of secure storage of firearms and to include this information in the online registration process.

Below are gun safety tips for families:

  • Store your guns in a locked gun safe. Keep the gun safe and keys hidden from children and other family members.

  • Keep your ammunition in a locked safe that is separate from your gun safe. The National Rifle Association (NRA) recommends that guns be stored unloaded until they are needed.

  • Put a different lock on each gun. Store the keys out of reach of your child and other family members.

  • Talk to your child early and often about gun safety. Tell him/her not to touch the guns or ammunition if he/she knows where they are stored.

Residents of West Bloomfield can get a gun lock (free of charge) from the police lobby window anytime. Bloomfield Township Police Department also provides cable gun locks free of charge to residents, available at their front desk (open 24/7).
