Eastover third grader Logan Mills describes how they are learning about the Caldecott Award, "It isn't just about whether you think the pictures are pretty. We have to answer questions and rate the illustrators. My winner is, 'The Day You Begin." Charis Smyly adds, "We have to determine if the pictures help tell the story and match the mood of the character." "The cover of the book and how colorful it is helps me decide if I want to read it," voices Fatou Deme. Media Specialist Cindy Livingston explains, "The students have the opportunity to check out Caldecott awarded books from previous years to examine illustrations and help form their vote for the winner of 2018. It's been fun having everyone, including the faculty and staff participate and choose their winner. Students benefit from this initiative and gain greater awareness of the importance of the illustrators role in telling the story. It will be exciting when the Caldecott Award is announced!"
